When Where There's Smoke's contributors were young in the 1950s and 60s, steam locomotives were a fundamental part of the world, as ever-present and certain as air and water, grass and school. A whistle from the station, steam trails in the countryside, distant exhaust beats carrying on still night air. Even the smallest engines were scary up close.
Part 1 covers operations from Scotland all the way to Cape Town, with chapters encompassing Western Europe, Eastern Europe, the Middle East including Turkey, and Northern, Central and Southern Africa. Part 2 encompasses steam locomotives operating from Eastern Mongolia and the Khyber pass in Pakistan, to Indonesia and India, to Australia and New Zealand, and ending in South America.
